Mawi is a refugee from Ethiopia turned activist and educator who has inspired millions with his incredible story of survival, compassion, strength, and his practical hands-on techniques for improving student performance and well-being. With his company, Mawi Learning™, Mawi has developed, tested, and implemented programs to stimulate leadership, boost GPAs, and build character. As Harvard Magazine put it, “Asgedom has taken the disparate things life has given him up to now, bound them together to make them whole, and transformed them into something for the nourishment and use of others.” Mawi has published eight leadership books used in classrooms worldwide and his bestselling autobiography, "Of Beetles and Angels," chronicling his family's story.

Heather Forbes is the owner of the Beyond Consequences Institute. She has worked in the field of trauma and healing since 1999. She is an internationally published author and speaker on the issues that arise when children and young adults are impacted by trauma. Coming from a family of educators, Forbes has a heart for children in the classroom and for finding ways to teach the child that seems “unteachable” through her love/relationship-based approach. Her signature style is to bridge the gap between scientific research and real-life application to equip and empower parents, educators, and therapists with the practical and effective tools they need to help every child return back to the love of learning.

Joe Navarro is considered a world-class observer and master of reading non-verbals. A former police officer and retired FBI agent, Joe spent 25 years working in the areas of counterintelligence and counterterrorism. Through his work he was able to study, refine and apply the science of nonverbal communications and became notable for his insights into human behavior. Today, he is recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on reading nonverbal communications and is regularly interviewed on programs such as NBC’s TODAY, Fox News, ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, and for publications such as The Washington Post and Psychology Today. Navarro has published 13 books, including the international best seller "What Every BODY Is Saying."

Jasmyn Wright is a globally recognized educator and author. She is the CEO and Founder of The Push Through Organization—a non-profit that uses innovative practices to equip, inspire, educate, and empower individuals to overcome adversity and become change agents. An elementary educator of 10 years, Jasmyn’s empowering and out-of-the-box teaching style has been featured in a global GAP Kids back-to-school campaign, as well as various national and international news and media outlets, including NPR News and Good Morning America.

D.J. Schoeff has worked as a school resource officer (SRO) with K-12 students since 2008. D.J. was elected as the 2nd vice president of National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) in 2016. In July 2020, he will begin his role as president of NASRO. D.J. has continually promoted the development of high-quality training for SROs across the globe. Within the state of Indiana, D.J. served as the secretary of the Indiana School Resource Officers Association (INSROA) from 2012 to 2016.

A Message About TISC and the Coronavirus:

Dear Friend/Colleague:

The outbreak of the coronavirus has brought a new level of uncertainty to all of us these past few weeks. In planning this conference, our first concern is everybody's health and safety. While this conference is more than three months out, nobody really knows how this will all unfold as we move forward.

If you are considering registering for this conference, I want to give you the reassurance that we are hoping for the best but will take action in the event of the worst. This means that the conference is still on as planned. However, if this outbreak continues in full force through the end of June, we will cancel it to ensure everybody's safety. If this conference is canceled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), you will receive a full refund for your registration fee. Also, every major airline is saying they will waive all airline change fees, if needed (please check each airline's exact policy prior to booking). Hotels typically give you three days prior to check-in to cancel, as well.

Based on the historical patterns of similar viruses and with the opinions of several experts I have read, it seems highly likely to me that by the end of June, this threat will no longer be an all consuming issue. We at BCI are hoping for this positive outcome as this conference is near and dear to our hearts! But rest assured, we will take care of you if we have to change course.

Stay regulated and keep letting love in,

Heather T. Forbes, LCSW
