Equity By Design: Honoring Impact Over Intentions
Every student deserves the opportunity to be successful regardless of their zip code, the color of their skin, the language they speak, their sexual and/or gender identity, or whether or not they have a disability. If we truly want to be inclusive in our districts, schools, and classrooms, we must proactively plan for student variability and begin to see culture and diversity as an asset. “I didn’t mean it” rarely resonates with a student who has been hurt or harmed. If we want to fully overcome cultural barriers to improve learning outcomes, it will take valuing impact over our intentions. Our calling is to go beyond ourselves, commit to removing barriers for all learners, and treat our learners with unequivocal respect and dignity.
