"The Power of a Student's Belief System"
Many of our students' histories are plagued with multiple layers of chronic and prolonged abuse, abandonment, and/or neglect. The result is a negative belief system that drives our students to self-sabotage, reject help, and create chaos. Their negative belief systems keep them in a chronic state of stress and have the power to render useless even the best of teacher support, proven mindful techniques, and unwavering support systems. This keynote will shine light on this often misunderstood and overlooked issue for our students and, more importantly, how to help students change these negative beliefs into positive ones of self-love, self-acceptance, and self-confidence. "Connections > Content "
It is easy to connect with the students who naturally reciprocate, but it is our  challenging students who desperately need the adults in their lives the most. As a student whose life was defined by a reality of pain and hardship, Missouri’s 2021 Teacher of the Year, Darrion Cockrell would not be who he is today without the extra love and efforts made by those along his developmental journey. Come hear how the educators in Darrion’s life—his school counselor, teachers, and principal—reached out, connected, and helped him get onto a new path, despite his distrust of them and complete disregard for school. Hear how Darrion continues to channel the power of teacher-student relationships in his current role as a physical education teacher. Darrion lives by the unwritten rule that the educator’s role includes making connections, building trust, and making sure that every student within their path finds the greatness within themselves. Darrion firmly believe, "All it takes is one person – just one—to make a student's experience great. That person can be you." More info.
