Mirko Chardin is the founding head of school of the Putnam Avenue Upper School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mirko’s work has involved all areas of school management and student support. His greatest experience and passion revolve around culturally connected teaching and learning, recruiting and retaining educators of color, restorative practice, and school culture. Mirko is the co-author with Dr. Katie Novak of the newly released book, Equity by Design: The Power and Promise of UDL. He is a principal mentor for the Perone-Sizer Creative Leadership Institute and a trustee at Wheaton College. He also is an active hip-hop artist and released the album, Unhealthy Societies, in 2018.

Heather T. Forbes is the founder and owner of the Beyond Consequences Institute (BCI). She has worked in the field of trauma and healing since 1999. Heather is an internationally published author on the topics of working with children exhibiting difficult and severe behaviors, the impact of trauma on the developing child, adoptive motherhood, and self-development. Her most recent release, Classroom180, is leading the trauma-informed movement, giving educators a framework to create and assess the trauma-informed classroom.  Much of her experience and insight comes from her direct mothering experience of her two adopted children and mentoring a severely trauma-impacted young adult.

Darrion Cockrell is Missouri’s 2021 Teacher of the Year. He is a physical education teacher at Crestwood Elementary School in St. Louis. “Mr. DC,” as his students call him, understands first-hand the value of relationships and the need for positive and strong role models for students. It was through the relationship with his middle school football coach that he was brought out of the depths of his own childhood challenges and traumatic experiences. Now, as a teacher and role model for his students, Darrion focuses on creating strong relationships with his students and spends much of his free time supporting them in their activities. Darrion also received a 2020 National Box Tops for Education Twilight Award.

Documentary Screening
CAREgivers - image for website2 copy.jpg
Join us on the Sunday evening before the conference for the screening of CAREgivers. We recognize that after dealing with the demands, uncertainty, and unpredictability of the pandemic, educators and those supporting students are depleted. Compassion fatigue, contact experience, and secondary trauma are real.

The question is, "Who helps the helpers?" It is time for you to be recognized, validated, and rejuvenated so the TISC Team is dedicating this evening to you! After viewing this 56-minute documentary, we will be offering experiential sessions to give you an evening of replenishment. Many of our sessions will use techniques suggested in the documentary such as sessions with yoga, singing bowls, reflective journaling, comedy, social support circles, meditation, and more! This evening is included with your registration at no additional charge.

*This documentary is also included in the TISC® 2021 virtual option. Access for virtual attendees will be from Sunday, October 17th through Tuesday, October 19th.
It is our first priority to ensure that this conference is a safe environment for everyone, especially as this pandemic continues to evolve. We will be requiring all attendees, speakers, and exhibitors to show proof of being fully vaccinated prior to entry--no exceptions. We are 100% committed to holding a much needed trauma-informed conference that is safe for all attendees. We believe this pandemic is a public safety issue and will hold strong to our proof of vaccination policy.

We also recognize that vaccination is a personal choice and for some, being in large crowds can feel too overwhelming right now. Thus, we are offering a virtual option so you don't have to miss out!

Please note that the term "fully vaccinated" is defined by receiving either the Pfizer (two doses), Moderna (two doses), or Johnson & Johnson (one dose) vaccines at least two weeks prior to the conference.
Our venue, the St. Charles Convention Center, recently installed an AtmosAir system (a high-end air purification technology) as well as UV lighting into their HVAC system. This air purification technology produces hospital quality air circulated throughout the convention center for your safety.
We are limiting our registration this year to give you the ability to spread out, if desired. Instead of being at full capacity as in years past, we will be about forty percent less this year for your benefit.

We are excited to have the following sponsors and exhibitors at TISC2021:

Become an exhibitor or sponsor and receive a space to exhibit your company or school's resources or services. Sponsors will have their logo on our conference website. Both sponsors and exhibitors will have recognition in the conference app. This is an excellent way to promote awareness of the resources you have to offer to the ever growing community of trauma-informed educators and parents in Missouri and around the nation. Complete and submit our form so we can better understand your area of expertise and a representative will follow-up with you to discuss options.
